Today we had the fifth annual Kids' Festival.
It opened with the announcement of the winners of the poster competition. The first prize went to Kyoko who got 1000yen to use in Toys-R-Us. The two runners up were Shunpei and Nozomi who each got 500yen.
The main event and was opened by Sota and Takumi and we then got to see 13 wonderful performances ranging from singing to plays and even a quiz. Everyone tried really hard and we were very impressed how well everyone remembered their lines.
Well done to all those who took place and thank you to all of you who came. We look forward to seeing what next year will bring.

English Speech Contest
Today we had the pleasure of watching the Iwate Elementary School English Speech Contest. There were as many as 40 participants, 6 of whom where from Zenrinkan.
There were three sections. The first was for kindergarden and elementary 1st to 3rd grade students and was a short memorization about the changing colours in autumn. The second section was a longer memorization piece for the older students. They recited a story many of you may know, "Freddie the Leaf". Then the third section was free composition.
During the break, the students performed a dance routine to entertain the audience.
Out of the six Zenrinkan students, 3 were awarded prizes, but everyone tried their best and gave wonderful speeches. Well done to all those who took part!

Halloween Classes
It is almost Halloween, so this week has seem some very spookey classes! The children have been learning about ghosts and goblins and other gruesom Halloween words.
As a Halloween creepy craft, the children prepared Marshmallow Frankensteins. They dipped marshmallows in green food colouring, then used melted chocolate to make the hair and mouth, and stuck candy eyes on using the chocolate. It was then finished off with some pretzel bolts.

Ogama Kid's Festival
This year for the first time we had a Kid's Festival for the off-campus class at Ogama.
There were 10 performances in total, ranging from the pre-school children to the middle school class. The performances included some songs, jokes and a story. The children also got to meet their new teacher Alicia.
We also enjoyed singing a song with the audience in English and everyone played a game together. We also got to see Shiyu recite his speech from the Iwate Children's Speech contest and he could still remember it even though it was 5 months after the event!

Kids' Festival
Today was the annual kids' festival at Zenrinkan. At 1.30, everyone gathered to be entertained by the students of 15 children's classes.
The program opened with the youngest students rendition of the "hello song" and the members of the Wednesday kid's class doing a very cute recital of "the wheels on the bus".
The older students mostly entertained us with some skits and we even had three poems and a selection of jokes.
"The Hare and the Tortoise" and a presentation about how to save the environment gave us pause for thought.
Not only were the performances wonderful, but the art work was also incredible, much of it made by the class teachers. お疲れ様でした！

Halloween Party
Today was the children's Halloween party. We had almost 200 kids come to join us in an evening of tricks, treats and scary stories.
The event began with a play put on by the English-speaking staff that told the story of how the Jack-O-Lantern got its name and was narrated by our guest story teller in Japanese. The storyteller also did her own story and told many spooky tales all through the night.
Afterwards the children were free to enjoy all the stalls and activities. The Haunted House was as popular as always and created a few screams. The new events included a science corner where they could make a tree grow icicles, play with slime, make a head foam at the mouth and experiment with air. The treasure hunt was also popular, but a bit much for some with some tricky clues.
The regular events were the pumpkin carving, craft and cooking. This year the children made their own candy-floss. Thanks to all our helpers it was a very successful night.

Kids' English Festival
Today was the kids' festival! We had 40 children perform songs, games and plays, and over 100 parents and grandparents watching! The proceedings were opened by Nicola's Wednesday class and then they were joined by two of her Saturday classes to sing "Five Little Monkeys".
Next was Susan's class demonstrating their ABCs and then Careen and Hiroko's class presented Bill Martin's "Brown Bear".
Next Ryan's class did a skit based on the story of the Candadian who exchanged his way from a red paper clip to a house.
Then Nicola's Elementary 2 class told the Story of Momotaro using Kamishibai story boards.
Kazuko's class treated us to a quiz and many audience members answered questions about famous stories.
Careen played a Chinese Whispers game (伝言ゲーム) with her Elemetary 4 class.
Next were two plays, the first called "Lion and the Little Mice" by Ryan's class and "A Bullying Bear" by Yasuko's class of Elemetary 5th years.
